MKMMA Week #16 – So What?

In this post I will introduce you to a secret will have a dramatic affect on your mindset and your performance. I use the secret everyday. “Man, the gas just went up by thirty cents a gallon since lunch!” the guy says. “So what?” is my response.

Steroids in professional sports are getting out of hand.” And again my response is, “So what?

Can you believe what the Democrats, Republicans did/said/didn’t do/didn’t say?” You are probably ahead of me by now. My response? “So what?

Now if you just got tweaked about my comments, so what?

By now you’ve uncovered the secret. It’s two words. They are “So” and “What”. These two words will change your performance and your results…drastically.

You see, what these words do is put things in perspective. Take the gas price comment from above. So what if the price went up thirty cents since lunch? How does stating the obvious change anything? More importantly, how much money does it put in your pocket?
Adopting this philosophy will assist you in staying on track toward your goals. It will prevent others from distracting you. It will allow you to focus on what you want, not stress and fret about something that you have little or no control over.

There are controllable variables and uncontrollable variables in life. If you choose to invest your energy into uncontrollable variables, your end result will be stress and frustration.

On the other hand, should you place your efforts on the controllable variable side of the ledger, you now have hope and expectation. You now have enthusiasm and drive. And you also have the opportunities to change what you can change. That’s what will make a difference.

So as your friends and family get their shorts in a wad about gas prices, steroids in baseball, or the political elites running their mouths without saying anything, remember those two simple words that will set you free…..SO WHAT?

    David, I LOVE that Stephen Covey quote, and I loved your blog about the words “so what”. Now that I have tried it, it really does crystallize that so little of what we pontificate about really matters in the grand scheme of things. Thank you!

    Thanks for sharing and reminding us what we should be focusing our thoughts on. I also like the quote, “don’t sweat the small stuff, it’s all small stuff” Keep you magnifying lens handy and follow your compass.
